Sebastian Cordova races in the 500-yard freestyle preliminary race. He advanced to the final and took sixth place in the district.

Katherine Adams races in the 100-yard breastroke final. She won the race, finishing nine seconds ahead of second place. Adams solidified her spot in the 6A state-level meet as one of the top competitors. At the state meet, Adams took the title in the 100-yard breastroke, and also received an Athlete of the Meet award. “I was really proud of the girl’s state team this year because we got fourth place and were higher than we have been in over a decade. I was happy with my individual swims, as it was my first state win, but overall I think I was happier with how the team did as a whole,” Adams said.

The Lincoln boy’s relay team takes first place in the 200-yard medley relay, beating the second place team by six seconds. Team listed in order from left to right: Sebastian Cordova, Evan Russell, Cameron Chen, Lucas Williams.

Lucy Rush competes in the 100-yard butterfly final and takes home the first place medal, becoming a district champion in the event and advancing to State.

Charlotte Ducanois swims the final leg for the Lincoln girl’s 400-yard free relay. The team won the district title in the 400-yard relay, which advanced them to the state-level meet. At State, they placed fourth in the event. The team was made up of four swimmers, listed from left to right: Mia Saavedra, Lucy Rush, Natalie Moser, Charlotte Ducanois.

Lucas Williams swims in the 100-yard breastroke final. Williams placed second in the event. Williams' fast time got him a wildcard entry into the state-level meet. Senior Cameron Chen also competed in the final, placing third.

Freshman Reiko Nitta swims in the 100-yard breaststroke final. Despite being in the B final, she outswam many swimmers in the A final, placing seventh overall in the district.

Izzie McCormick swims in the 100-yard breastroke preliminary race, where she came in sixth place. This advanced her to the finals, where she shaved three seconds off of her previous personal record and finished in fourth place. McCormick was also part of the girls 200-yard freestyle relay, which advanced to the state-level meet.

Coach Kaiel raises the plaque in victory for the Lincoln swim team. “I think more than preparing them to compete, I had to get to know them first," Kaiel said about the season. "I think my greatest strength as a coach is an ability to motivate. This requires an understanding that can take a while to develop. I think I was able to accomplish that this season, and it helped us as the season progressed, but it will also hopefully carry forward into next season as well. The most important thing for a swim coach to do is to make it fun, and I try to do that every day.”

Lincoln High School's swim team has endured much adversity throughout the last two years. While many other sports teams were able to have at least a shortened season in 2021, Lincoln’s swim team didn't even get a season. This year, the team was finally able to compete regularly, but the season wasn't without difficulties. “This season was different in a lot of ways," coach Mikha Kaiel said. "We had less pool time because the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) didn’t have enough lifeguards. We had swimmers miss large parts of the season because of COVID and needing to quarantine.” Despite the challenges, Lincoln still found success. Both the girl’s and boy’s teams won their respective district titles, and many swimmers qualified for the state competition. The girl’s team in particular went on to place fourth out of 25 teams at State.

Sports have been in full swing since the start of the school year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Portland Public Schools (PPS) has had to constantly update their athletics guidelines and procedures to ensure the safety of athletes.
