Who plays frisbee during the fall season? What does it mean to see a season of “bagels”? And what on earth is a “doink”? Many students may be unaware of the existence of the ultimate frisbee team at Lincoln. This fall season, the frisbee team consists of 16 players and is coed.

“The goal of a frisbee game is to score more points than the other team. To achieve that, the team needs to complete passes to each other with someone catching the disc in the end zone,” said the team’s coach, Lewis Mikkelson.

Similar to Lincoln’s coed recreational soccer team, the frisbee team consists of two schools within the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL). Working together the frisbee team is made up of Lincoln and Ida B. Wells students. They compete against other similar teams.

“Our team plays other high school teams from around Portland in the league.  If we play in tournaments, we could face high schools from outside of Portland or even from different states,” said Mikkelson.

Ida B. Wells Junior Daniel Milander joined frisbee five years ago and has never looked back. He enjoys the fast paced nature of the game.

“[In practice] we get to work on a skill specifically and then immediately apply it in a scrimmage,” said Milander.

Milander became involved in frisbee and joined the team because of previous experiences in sports at school.

“In middle school I played soccer for many years and wanted to try something new and different so I signed up for a [frisbee] camp and just kinda fell in love with it,” said Milander.

To all the pancake catchers of this world, thankfully Lincoln offers a plethora of sports. It’s refreshing to see more alternative sports ramp up this fall season.

“Ultimate is just exciting to play and the frisbee community is extremely welcoming and fun,” said Mikkelson.
