‘Marshmallow’ psychologist set for visit

Noted psychologist Dr. Walter Mischel will be visiting Lincoln to promote and discuss his new book, “The Marshmallow Test.”  organized by the Arbor School, The event, called “Beyond Marshmallows,” will take place in the auditorium on Nov. 23 at 3 p.m., with a keynote followed by pre-selected questions. However, because of limited seating and widespread interest, organizers are asking interested individuals to make reservations online.

Mischel is best known for conducting the Marshmallow Experiment while at Stanford University, in which 36 preschool-age children were offered either one marshmallow immediately or two marshmallows 15 minutes later. The breakthrough study provided insights into the concepts of willpower, self-control and delayed gratification. In a follow-up study, Mischel also found that delayed gratification from an early age resulted in more success later in life.

In his upcoming lecture and new book, Mischel touches on all these ideas and more. Particularly, he hopes to invite discussion about “self-regulation and the development of the character traits that will enable students to pursue their highest aspirations.” Mischel is currently on a publicity tour for his book, with stops such as the Colbert Report and the Economist magazine. In addition to his lecture at Lincoln, he will also be signing books at the West Burnside Powell’s on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Reservations and more information about the lecture can be found at: http://www.arborschool.org/news/blog/2014/10/9/beyond-marshmallows.
