Zane Mills knocks out a hit as the freshmen glide to a 21-1 victory over Madison April 7.

Freshmen Zane Mills and Trenten Luch helped secure Lincoln its first PIL win of the season April 7 at Glenhaven Park. The two combined to baffle the Senators at the plate, allowing no hits en route to a 21-1 victory. “We really dominated all aspects of the game today,” said head coach Cameron Webb. The victory improved the Cardinals’ record to 2-3 (1-0 in the PIL)

Mills retired the first eight batters he faced, sitting them all down on strikes. “I felt like I was in control of the game out there today,” he said. He ended his day on the mound with eight strikeouts and just two walks in three innings of work. “My arm felt good this game, and striking out batters was easy,” Mills said.

Not to be overshadowed, however, was an equally dominant performance by Luch. Coming in to close out the final two innings on the mound, he gave up no earned runs and struck out one.

Lincoln’s offense provided their pitchers with plenty of support, posting those 21 runs on 12 hits. “The boys did a good job of playing at their best despite facing a weak opponent,” Webb said. Jack Plew contributed two of the Cardinals’ four doubles. “I was seeing the ball well at the plate, and my line drives were able to find gaps,” Plew said. Shortstop Ethan Salinsky and center fielder Eli Cory each brought in four runs at the plate.

Next up for the Cardinals is Jefferson April 9 at Pendleton Park.
