This year, the cheer team continues their growth streak. According to the 2023-2024 Cardinal Yearbook, the cheer team tripled from 2021 to 2023, growing from eight cheerleaders to 23. This year, there are 29 cheerleaders on the team. The team has a new coach, Ilia Duckler.
Senior and cheer captain Briana Wyman says the team is thriving.
“The cheer team has shown so much growth since the first practice. Lots of girls have developed new skills and all have significantly improved in their communication and performance,” said Wyman.
The team has been cheering at every football game. They have many routines they are learning and perfecting and they also have brand-new outfits.
Senior CC Smith especially liked their homecoming assembly performance.
“Our homecoming performance [was my favorite]. So many people and great energy!” said Smith.
Students who filled the stands during the homecoming assembly and watched the cheerleader performance agreed.
“There were so many [new people], and they brought a lot of good energy to the assembly and got us hyped for the homecoming weekend,” said junior Ali Kurian.
Wyman is especially excited for the rest of the season.
“There is a great amount of communication and support that goes into being a cheerleader. Every person on the team has created strong bonds with one another, which have carried on outside of cheer,” said Wyman.
