What is your name and pronouns?
Nathan Beck, he/him
What is your position at Lincoln?
“I am a math teacher teaching Algebra 3-4 and Geometry. [I am] mostly teaching 10th, 11th, and some 9th grades.”
Where were you before this?
“I taught at Southridge High School for many years. Then I taught at Sellwood Middle school, where I taught a marimba program, and I taught math as well. Then I stopped teaching marimba because I had ringing in my ears. I had to stop, and I chose to move back to high school since I was just teaching math. I would rather teach math at a high school than middle school.”
What made you want to come to Lincoln?
“I was looking for a high school job in Portland Public [Schools], and this job opened up. My wife, Ms. Beck also teaches here. We taught together at Southridge, [and] some of the other faculty members here taught at Southridge too. It’s nice to be back at high school, it’s a wonderful place to be. I’m happy to be here.”
What are some of your hobbies?
“I’m a musician so I spend a lot of my time playing music. I also teach some music. I also teach a class up at Lewis and Clark College, and I teach a little bit out of my home. I teach a marimba class, and at home I have some adult marimba students. [They are] mostly older folks, that are enjoying playing music for the first time. At Lewis and Clark, I have a lot of undergrads who are learning about music from Zumba Aboya in South Africa.”
What are you looking forward to this school year
“Just looking forward to a new school and colleagues. It’s a great building, and students are wonderful so far.”
