Senior Hildi Harrington’s first and only year on the staff of The Cardinal Times is coming to a close.
Harrington has been an active and accomplished student at Lincoln, excelling in many extracurricular activities. She is the team captain of the girls wrestling team, which she has been involved in for two years.
Her co-captain and friend, senior Isabel Bruce, said, “We had a lot of fun because we [would] both go swing dancing all the time. It was really awesome to be able to incorporate swing dancing in between bout numbers and tournaments during the season!”
Furthermore, Harrington competes in throwing events as a track and field athlete and participates in Mock Trials, which further highlights her well-rounded nature.
“You can learn so much and every activity can have such different benefits,” said Harrington.
On the newspaper, she’s worked on projects ranging from an opinion essay on the challenges faced by Lincoln’s ASL program to reporting on the hairless cats in the apartment complex across the street.
“We get to cover serious topics, but I think it’s harder to do that as a young person. So, I often go towards covering the more fun topics. Especially at a school, there are a lot of different, unique topics to cover that I think other news sources might not,” said Harrington.
Harrington said that being on the paper has helped her gain a lot of respect for reporters, especially those on smaller papers.
“Writing an article is unlike any other writing I have done, and it definitely isn’t something that is easy to be good at,” Harrington said. “It takes a certain talent and a lot of dedication.”
