2023 has given consumers a revival of the Tumblr girl fashion aesthetic, and along with that has come the rise of Uggs: a cozy boot made from sheepskin. Uggs were originally made in 1978 and attained massive popularity in the 2000s (ugg.com). After seemingly falling out of the trend cycle for several years, they have recently resurfaced.
Senior Anabel Hasenauer has been a loyal fan of Uggs since third grade.
“They just keep getting cuter and cuter,” said Hasenauer. “I love the ultra-minis so when I saw ultra-minis, I had to get them.”
Hasenauer also feels that Uggs are trending due to the recent “comfort-craze” that is taking over fashion.
“Comfort is definitely in and a lot of people wear [things like] sweat suits so you need something comfy to wear with that,” said Hasenauer.
Senior B Bleiler also loves Uggs because of their comfort.
“It’s like the teddy bear of shoes,” said Bleiler.
Bleiler loves to style their Uggs in a way that reflects their personal style, and plans to customize their Uggs in the future with sewing techniques.
“I was gonna do some anatomical hearts and some red contrast stitching,” said Bleiler.
Junior Emmeline Lang feels that Uggs are not the most attractive shoe on the market.
“I always thought they were kind of ugly, they’re kind of chunky,” said Lang. “I feel like they should be a slipper, but people wear them out.”
However, Lang also feels that the newer Uggs are an improvement from the original ones.
“I like the shorter ones, the longer ones weren’t my favorite,” said Lang.
Going into the summer, Uggs may be a less practical choice due to their warm and cozy feel.
“They’re a winter, spring and fall shoe,” said Hasenauer.
Bleiler feels that Uggs could still work for the cooler days of summer, if styled correctly.
“I think if it’s a cool day, I’ll wear my Uggs with shorts,” said Bleiler. “Small top, small bottoms, chunky shoes. I think that can work.”
Bleiler also sees Uggs continuing to stay in fashion going into next year.
“I believe that they’ll make a comeback again, just in terms of how efficient they are,” said Bleiler. “Hopefully by then a lot of us will be taking our personal style into our own hands and not really caring if it’s in or out.”
