The new movie “Bob Marley: One Love,” directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, had high expectations from fans of the famous reggae artist and did not disappoint. The movie explores the life and career of the highly influential Jamaican singer and guitarist Bob Marley.
In an interview with Paramount Pictures, Ziggy Marley, producer and Bob Marley’s eldest son, said that “We have approached this as a creative project, not an emotional thing. My emotions are beyond this. It’s about showing the truth.” In his role as producer, he helped bring authenticity to the film.
The movie shows the way Marley (played by Kingsley Ben-Adir) created music to spread positivity to the world. His main goal was to use music as a way to spread important messages of social justice, human rights, peace, love and unity. In one scene, Marley and his band, the Wailers, specifically say how each of their songs are created to have a purpose and that they don’t care about money, because that’s not their goal.
This movie takes place in a variety of different places Marley and the Wailers visited throughout their 1976-1978 world tour. The movie is labeled as a musical/drama. I assumed that since it was labeled as a musical there would be many scenes of people breaking out into song and dance. Thankfully, I was wrong. This genre label is due to the amount of scenes where Marley and the Wailers rehearse while on tour.
Overall, I believe that this movie had a good story to tell. From the various locations, the plot, and amazing actors, such as Kingsley Ben-Adir who played Marley, with a strong portrayal. It made this movie very entertaining, which also highlighted Bob Marley and some of the difficult things that he had to face during his career, such as segregation and prejudice. Instead of a movie about his legacy after passing away from acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), which is a rare type of skin cancer, it represented why he became famous in the first place. The movie shows his life after an assassination attempt. The movie does a good job at showing the reasoning behind how Bob Marley and the Wailers were so successful and the impact they had on the world.
