5 Great Books To Read This Spring

1. The Unwelcomed Child by V.C. Andrews (2014)- The outstanding author

that shocked us with her first novel Flowers in the Attic back in ’79 ventures

forward into a new genre- psychological fiction- to explain the hardships

of a girl named Elle Edwards, who is basically on house arrest due to her

grandparents Prescott and Myra fearing she might be the spawn of the Devil.

Elle, in later years, finds out that her mother left her right after she gave

birth but what hits her the most is the fact that she is a product of rape and

abuse. On Elle’s fifteenth birthday, she finally gets the luxury on going to a

restaurant for her birthday. There she meets a guy named Mason and his

twin sister Claudine. A week later, she sees them again and gets to know

them better, eventually getting much closer to Mason. But will her world

shatter to pieces if her grandparents find out about her secret connection to

the vacationers?

2. The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson (2013)- Ms. Johnson does a

really good job on this epic first novel. Set in the futuristic part of Brazil

called Palamares Tres, June Costa is a local artist from Tier 8, a slightly

dilapidated part of town, set to be in the world of fame and getting known

for her artwork. Suddenly, the Summer Prince elections are being held and a

new member Enki who just might make the cut. Enki is cool, handsome, and

like June, an artist at heart. The whole city falls in love with him, even June’s

best friend Gil. When Gil and Enki become exclusive enough for gossipers

to be intrigued, June proposes Enki to become her partner in the biggest art

project she has ever made to win the town award. But like all Summer Kings,

Enki is destined to die. Is June’s heart able to cope with the news?

3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (2013 edition)- A classic American

Dream novel that foretells tragedy, romance, and mystery wrapped up in a

bundle we all can enjoy. Meet Jay Gatsby, a self-made entrepreneur who is

desperate to get back in contact with his ex-lover Daisy Buchanan. With its

twists and turns, along with a theatrical version involved, welcome to the

world of wealth and priority in the 1920’s.

4. Murder at the Academy Awards by Joan Rivers (2009)- Ah, Joan Rivers. The

eccentric woman who speaks her mind 24/7 on Fashion Police. In her way

of grasping the reader’s attention, the titular character, Maxine Taylor is

suddenly on the look out on who killed Halsey Hamilton- the handsome actor

finally out of rehab and drops dead at the Academy Awards. Is Maxine Taylor

able to find out who killed Halsey Hamilton?

5. And lastly, Doctor Sleep by Stephen King- We all know him. We all love

him but what makes this ravishing novel to make it to my list is the key

characters in this mystery novel. The sequel to 1977’s The Shining, Stephen

brings us back to the now middle-aged Dan Terrence who must save a

spunky twelve-year-old girl named Abra Stone from a tribe of murderous

paranormals called True Knot. They may seem harmless- old, wear polyester

and glued to their RVs- but when Dan emerges as Doctor Sleep in a small

New Hampshire town, there is more trouble through the surface.
