Senior Gwenie Lee took on the role of arts and culture editor on The Cardinal Times her junior year. She joined the newspaper her sophomore year, after enjoying being a part of the yearbook at West Sylvan and taking Mass Communications at Lincoln her freshman year.
Lee’s favorite part of the class is the positive environment and getting to know her classmates.
“I’ve met some of my closest friends in this class, and I’m going to be really sad to leave them in college. Some of my best memories are in this class,” said Lee.
Lee published many articles over the years. One of her favorites was “Mukbang culture divides students.” Another favorite was a recurring column she wrote for both The Cardinal Times and Willamette Week covering the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL).
“Taking on the PIL column was really rewarding, and I learned a lot about sports reporting and how to represent people in a way that makes them feel validated. It really challenged me as a writer,” said Lee.
In addition to the paper, Lee enjoyed playing on the Lincoln soccer team for all four years of high school.
“Doing soccer with Lincoln was one of my favorite memories. I had such an incredible team around me, and it was wonderful to go through high school as such a strong unit of girls.”
Senior Gretchen Brandle, Lee’s teammate and best friend, admires her sense of humor and extroverted energy. Since first grade, Brandle has loved Lee’s ability to lighten the mood.
“I really do think that the energy she brings is so vital to everyone she’s around, and everyone always loves being around her,” said Brandle.
Lee encourages other Lincoln students to be as involved in as many school activities as possible. She will be attending the University of Washington in the fall to major in anthropology and says, “sco dawgs!”
