Scarlett Dempsey joined the Mass Communications class on a whim as a freshman, and this decision led her to form close friendships and discover an interest in journalism. This fall, she will attend the Clarks Honors College at the University of Oregon and major in journalism.

“I loved my freshman year Mass Communications class. I met all of my friends, who I’m still very good friends with to this day, in that class, like Meghan [Whitten], Amanda [Schubert] and Darby [Drozdenko],” said Dempsey.

Dempsey loved learning about others through journalism, and this inspired her to continue.  She joined The Cardinal Times in her sophomore year and became an opinions editor and designer as well as a reporter.

“I really like interviewing and always have… I like being able to talk to people in our school who I wouldn’t know otherwise,” said Dempsey. “[I enjoy] being able to [hear people] talk about themselves or talk about the things that they’re interested in.”

During her junior year, Dempsey applied for and was accepted to take on the role of co-editor-in-chief alongside Schubert and Whitten during her senior year.

Dempsey says she’s developed many skills during her three years on the paper as reporter, designer, and editor.

“[I have developed my] professionalism and communication [skills] with other people, and have gotten better at asking good questions,” said Dempsey.

Outside of The Cardinal Times, Dempsey is a captain of Lincoln’s girls tennis team. Her sister, freshman Vivenne Dempsey, admires how Dempsey is an enthusiastic, encouraging captain.

“She’ll hype you up, she’s very confident in herself and she’s very supportive when she’s watching other people,” said [Vivenne] Dempsey.
