The Hip-Hop club is a diverse group of students coming together to express themselves through elaborately choreographed dances. The club leader, sophomore Cerdric Johnson, wanted to create an environment where Lincoln students could connect with one another and feel comfortable being themselves.
Johnson felt that there was a need for “more diversity” in the Lincoln community, believing that would be a great start. The club focuses on learning dances and creating unique and personal routines.
The dances incorporate acrobatic spins and intricate foot work, making it visually appealing. hip-hop dance is deeply connected to Hip-Hop music and culture, allowing dancers to express themselves freely.
Sophomore Citlali Guerrero, co-leader of the club, wanted a place to relax and let go. A community with no expectations or judgment.
“The club is something to keep your mind off things that might bother you,” said Guerrero, “We’re just trying to have fun and interact with people, while building strong communication within our Lincoln community.”
When Johnson started the club, he had envisioned a smaller quantity of people to start with. The goal was to spend time with people one on one to build up the overall quality of the dancing.
“We had about 15 people sign up. And, I know for sure that there’s five or six people showing up,” said Johnson “but I prefer to start with a small group so that we can work one on one.”
The club hopes to honor the culture of hip-hop by sharing creative dances, writing and music, while educating Lincoln students about its extensive roots.
The club’s main goal is to get a large audience and take the stage at school events.
“I want us to be able to perform at pep rallies and football or basketball games,” said Johnson. “I want us to gain popularity so we can grow as time goes on.”
The club welcomes new people to join. They meet once a week in the band room after school.
“Have fun and be yourself, and bring a friend,” said Guerrero.
