Track teams place second at PIL championships, send 19 athletes to state

Both varsity track teams came in second at the PIL meet on May 13-14 and won district championships in six events. Combined, the teams claimed 13 guaranteed spots in 13 different events at the OSAA 6A State Championships to be held on May 22-23 at Hayward Field in Eugene. UPDATE: Six wildcard entrants have been added to the Cardinal roster of state meet participants. See story above.

Seniors Emma Lambert, Josiah Langstaff, and Quin Gattey qualified for 8/17 state events. Lambert was the big winner of the day, qualifying in five different events and winning both hurdle races. Langstaff and Gattey each qualified for two events at state, Langstaff in the 800m and 4×400 relay and Gattey in the 300m hurdles and both relays.

Claiming PIL titles were juniors Ransom Gravatt, who won the boys’ 1500m in 4:04.83, and Jada Smith, who won the girls’ 400m in 1:00.53 seconds. Sophomore Colette Jesson took home Gold in the javelin with a throw of 118 feet 2 inches.

Coach Charlotte Richardson was excited to have so many qualifiers and is eager to see how her teams do at state. “I’m looking forward to watching the relays,” Richardson said. “We came in second in all of our relays, and I’d really like to see if we can beat them at state.”
