Girls’ tennis team heads to district tournament

“We are undefeated, so going into the district’s tournament we have some healthy confidence,” girl’s tennis team captain Lily Wheary said, after the Cardinals won the dual meet championship. The tournament will take place May 11, 13, and 15, at Gabriel Park or Portland Tennis Center if it rains. Lincoln is sending five singles players and doubles teams to district competition.

Freshman Reed Hazard is seeded first and will start off Monday playing Wilson. “I’m excited,” she said. “It’s nice to know I’ll have my team there cheering me on the whole time.”

Sisters Emily and Taylor Rees are playing number-one doubles. Taylor, senior, will be playing for Portland State starting fall of 2015, while sophomore, Emily, will continue playing for Lincoln. “They have a great dynamic on and off the court,” coach Sue Basham said.

Seeded second for Lincoln’s doubles is sophomores Jennifer Song and Michiko Hunter. “I feel like we’re ready. I’ve know Michiko since elementary school, so we have a really close bond,” Song said. The duo only fell to Wilson during the regular season, and is scheduled to play a different Wilson pair on Monday.

The top four singles players and doubles teams will move on to State May 21 through May 23.
