After conquering Special District 1 with a 5-0 record at Rose City May 1, the girls’ golf team is preparing for state.

The top four players of the league’s individual standings are from Lincoln: senior Chiara Gavazzi, an Italian exchange student; junior returner Morgan Sloan, senior returner Sara Stember, and senior returner Katie Lee. They will be joined at state by junior Sophia Fraser.

The state tournament will be held at Trysting Tree Golf Club on May 18-19. Qualifiers include Sunset, Jesuit, Westview, Clackamas, West Linn, Lake Oswego, St. Mary’s Academy, South Salem, Sheldon, Roseburg, and Grants Pass, as well as the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams of each league.

Looking back at the first match, the girls tied for fourth place with Central Catholic at 210 points, while West Linn won the tournament March 16 with 243 points.  Participating in the Lincoln-hosted tournament at Riverside Country CLub were Sunset, Jesuit, West Linn, Sheldon, Central Catholic, and Beaverton. These teams are a few of the most competitive in the state and will also participate in the state tournament, besides Central and Beaverton. Lincoln took Gavazzi, Lee, Stember, Sloan, and junior Hailey Marlton. “Our result was somewhat disappointing, but I think that it was a good first experience for our new teammates,” said Stember.

Out of five 18-hole league matches, the Heron Lakes match on April 24 proved to be the highlight of the league. Scoring the team’s highest of the season at 243 points, the girls successfully won their match for the third time. Gavazzi led again with 69 points, followed by Stember (59), Sloan (58), Lee (57), and junior Sophia Fraser (37). “The results of the match were extremely exciting because it was our personal best as a team and it showed our potential for state,” said Sloan.

The second invitational was held at Trysting Tree in Corvallis ended with 334 strokes on April 29 with the absence of Lee. Gavazzi scored 72 strokes, Stember (81), Sloan (87), Fraser (94), and Ryu with no score. The team placed third at the invitational behind Summit, a 5A team, and Camas,. Gavazzi placed third, individually, with an even par.
