Girls’ tennis team off to Bend

Fourteen girls on the varsity tennis team left April 9 for Bend for a three-day tournament. “It should be a great opportunity for bonding while also getting a lot of good playtime in,” coach Sue Basham said. The tournament schedule is unknown, but schools such as Oregon Episcopal School and Jesuit will be participating.

Although the girls have yet to play a legitimate match, they defeated Westview, West Salem, and Southridge in pre-season games. “We have a lot of good freshmen, and it’s looking promising,” junior Zoe Parkel said. The team has been playing in between rainouts, and three matches have been postponed due to weather. “You can’t have girls slipping all over the place, but unfortunately that’s the case even if it’s just drizzling,” sophomore Carly Allen said.

Five seniors graduated last year, and a handful of freshmen have already played varsity this season. Freshman Reed Hazard has been playing #4 singles and is undefeated. “It’s been really awesome making so many new friends, and I’m excited to see what the season has in store for us,” Hazard said. The team’s next regular match is April 16 at Madison.
