Varsity boys fall to Sheldon in state playoffs

UPDATE by Ethan Salinsky ––– A fourth-quarter surge from Sheldon eliminated the varsity boys 54-53 from the 6A state basketball playoffs on March 3.

Trent Callan’s contributed 27 points, but it was not enough as the Cardinals saw their season end in Eugene.

Down 39-32 going into the fourth quarter, the Fighting Irish outscored Lincoln 22-14 behind the 16 points of Kellen Strahm to move onto the second round. Sheldon will face first-ranked West Linn in their next game.

BY Ben Baker ––– The varsity boys came from behind to defeat Cleveland 53-52 Feb. 24  in the final game of the regular season. With the win, the boys earned the 17th seed overall in state playoffs and will travel to play the 16th seed Sheldon Irish out of the Southwest conference March 3 at 7 p.m. Sheldon finished with an overall record of 15-10 and a league record of 10-4. The winner will travel to play the number one-seeded West Linn Lions.

Trent Callan led the Cardinals with 21 points in the Cleveland, but it was Jonah Pemberton who hit two free-throws to give the Cardinals the lead with 10 seconds left in the game. Callan hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 48 seconds remaining on the clock. The Cardinals finished the regular with an overall record of 16-8 and ended up second in the PIL behind Jefferson with a record of 12-4.
