Snowboard team boys win two categories, girls take third

The snowboard team won two trophies and one medal at its slopestyle competition on Feb. 7 at Mt. Hood Meadows.

Junior Michael Angyus earned a gold medal for winning individually. Both trophies were for third place girls’ squad (sophomore Sylvi Kruger, Ellie Andreyka, and freshman Logan Arata) and for 1st place boys’ squad (junior Michael Angyus, senior James Mitchell-Hart, sophomore Travis Martin, and Sam Mercer).

Conditions at the mountain were violent with three inches of rain and wind gusts as high as 50 mph. Snowboarders were able to compete but the ski team had its competition cancelled a day in advance. Skiers were not at the mountain on Saturday because the heavy rains washed away the snow on the run the team was to use. Not enough snow made it impossible to set up the course.

The next competition date is currently undecided. Snowboarders were supposed to compete on Feb. 14 at Meadows, but there is not enough snow to build the halfpipe.
