New magazine seeks student submissions

“Beyond the Flock,” is looking for students to submit their creative writing pieces and artwork. The magazine, which had its first issue published last spring, hopes to feature short stories, poems, paintings, and other art to showcase student talents.

“We’ve already gotten several pieces of art from students, and we’re hoping to feature them in our next publication,” said adviser Emily Hensley. “We even have two creative writing pieces. I think the creative writing class helps them get the [creative] stuff out there too–people don’t only write essays.”

Students from other art classes are also encouraged to share their pieces. “I would love to submit my artwork to the magazine,” said freshman Emma McGrane, who takes Draw Paint Print. “We’ve already finished a lot of beautiful projects that the magazine would probably enjoy.”

The magazine replaces Polyglot, a literary publication that began in 1965 but, according to Hensley, “lost the interest of students and became a burden for the teacher of the class.” Members of the magazine staff welcomed the change, since it gives the readers a voice, she said.

Parents are eager to see student work in the magazine. “I would always love to read any type of student work, whether it’s a poem or an entire book,” said Kristina Kurtz, the mother of a sophomore. “I hope that there are a lot of submissions because I know that there are many talented students out there.”
