As the school year comes to an end, students at Lincoln are already preparing for next year’s fall sports. Registration for many fall athletic programs opened in May, with tryout dates already scheduled for several teams. Here are all the sports Lincoln offers in the fall, along with registration descriptions and deadlines.
The lineup for next year’s fall sports includes: cheer, dance, football, volleyball, water polo, cross country and soccer. Most fall sports begin on Aug. 19 and run through Nov. 20, except dance and cheer, which conclude Feb. 15. Dance and cheer tryouts are this school year, May 28-29.
In order to participate, students must have an adult or guardian register them on Arbiter. To sign up, there is a $200 fee for registering before tryouts, and some teams may require students to have certain equipment to be on the team, which adds additional costs. Tryout times and coach information can also be found on Arbiter.
Before registering for fall sports, there are several requirements students must acquire before registering/trying out. The PIL (Portland Interscholastic League) requires that all students have a sports physical to determine eligibility. Sports physicals are typically valid for two school years and can be taken at any PPS health center, which are at Cleveland and Benson High School.
In addition, OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) requires that students must be enrolled and have passed five classes during the previous semester, (which can be transferable from other schools), and that students must be on track to graduate, including maintaining a GPA higher than 2.5.
Fall sports at Lincoln provide students with the opportunity to build teamworking skills, leadership and school spirit, while balancing academics. The teams offer new and returning athletes to join, allowing students to interact with sports at all levels. Getting involved with school athletics can help maintain activity and new social experiences, according to NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations), which explains more benefits. From cross country to cheerleading, each sport focuses on different strengths and skills, with most fall sports being no cut.
For more information on each individual sport, refer to the Lincoln athletics website, or check out each teams’ social media; most teams use Instagram.
