Senior Ryder Larson is a first-year reporter for The Cardinal Times; he’s also in Broadcast Journalism where he makes videos and podcasts for The Cardinal Times website. Before joining the staff, Larson took Mass Communications, where he began to improve his journalism skills.
While Larson had always been interested in narrative writing, including filmmaking, scripts, comics and animation, he wanted to learn more about informative writing.
“I just think journalism is a very interesting form of writing and it’s very informative,” said Larson. “It really helped hone in my skills on being more trustworthy and having less of a bias.”
At the beginning of high school, Larson never expected to be part of a news publication.
“I remember seeing The Cardinal Times as a freshman and being like, ‘This is so cool. This is not something I would do,’ but then I ended up doing it and I ended up having a lot of fun,” said Larson.
Since freshman year, he says he has grown socially after moving to Portland from the countryside.
“I learned how to be talkative and get to know people and make a lot of friends,” said Larson.
After high school, Larson plans to attend the University of Oregon to study journalism. Later, he hopes to move to Los Angeles to pursue film.
“I see myself still alive and still thriving no matter what situation I’m in,” said Larson. “Making the most of everything and still keeping a close community and keeping in contact with my family.”
