When a friend suggested that Skylah Foster join the newspaper her senior year, she decided to give it a try. Throughout the year on The Cardinal Times, Foster has written on everything from bagels to Jefferson High School’s renovation. She especially loves the broad range of topics she can cover.
“Each issue I can… just try different things,” said Foster. “I tried a bunch of different ways of writing and [it was] fun.”
As Foster experimented, she came to love writing a monthly music column where she shares music recommendations. Each article is similar to a curated playlist with songs that fit a certain theme.
“I feel like music brings people together,” said Foster. “Sharing music is such a communal thing.”
Outside of The Cardinal Times, Foster is a library aide and a goalie on the Lincoln soccer team.
“It was an honor to get play with [the] team,” said Foster. “The Lincoln team will always be super strong.”
Librarian Lori Lieberman describes Foster as intelligent, thoughtful and kind.
“She’s definitely one of those ‘still waters run deep’ kind of people,” said Lieberman. “Having her here [makes] the library just a richer place… she’s one of my favorite aides.”
In the fall, Foster plans on attending University of Puget Sound and majoring in English.
“I’ve always really loved to write… analyzing literature gives you the specific skill to be [an] analytical thinker… I feel like that skill and mindset is important in life,” said Foster.
