Senior Lila Howard’s passion for writing initially inspired her to join the Mass Communications class her freshman year. This later drove her journalism journey as a senior on The Cardinal Times staff this year.
During her time on the paper, Howard enjoyed writing stories that were engaging and lighthearted. Her favorite story reviewed the seasonal fall foods at Trader Joe’s because she enjoyed eating and reviewing food for the article. Howard also loves that journalism allows her to connect with new people through interviews.
“I love being able to talk to people and getting to learn more about what’s happening in the community,” said Howard.
Howard’s advice for aspiring writers is to embrace the discomfort that can come with writing and trying new things.
“Push yourself out of your comfort zone when it comes to what you write — it makes it more fun,” said Howard.
Along with working on The Cardinal Times, Howard is a competitive swimmer and works both at Providence Park and as a camp counselor at Southwest Community Center.
Howard feels supported by the community on The Cardinal Times.
“I love our community. I think [journalism is] a lot of fun and I really enjoy going to class and getting to hang out with everyone,” said Howard.
Friend and teammate Ellie Mayhew met Howard through the swim team and is now one of her close friends.
“Ever since I’ve known Lila, I’ve always admired and appreciated her devotion to everyone around her. She’s an incredibly selfless, kind and caring person,” said Mayhew.
