Known for their acting in Twilight and Euphoria, Robert Pattinson (Charlie) and Zendaya (Emma) star in a new film called The Drama, directed by Kristoffer Borgli. The film follows Charlie and Emma through their wedding planning. Although it is meant to be a joyous time, stories from their past resurface, shaking their relationship, as well as their relationships with Charlie’s best friend, Mike (Mamoudou Athie), and Emma’s maid of honor, Rachel (Alana Haim). It is a movie that will make your heart race and explores how two people who love each other battle their own morals.
When I first heard about The Drama and watched the trailer, I thought it would be a romantic comedy. But as the movie started, I realized I was wrong. The foundation of the movie was rooted in romance, but not solely romance. Sprinkled throughout the intro were little tidbits of foreshadowing that made me pause and think, “I was not expecting that.” Not knowing the stories from their past added suspense and helped the viewer understand the purpose of the movie.
One of the film’s strengths was the music written by Daniel Pemberton, who is best known for his work in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Project Hail Mary. There was nothing sweet and romantic about the score. It was anxiety-inducing and held my attention the whole time. I could feel my heart rate skyrocketing when the tension between Charlie and Emma began to build due to the stories they uncovered about their younger selves.
The acting stood out to me as well. I was pleasantly surprised by the emotional range of the actors, especially Alana Haim, who plays Rachel. After she finds out new information about Emma, she becomes cynical and disgusted by her, which could be seen during her speech at Emma’s wedding. She rolled her eyes and scoffed, making the audience despise her. She took a complicated character and turned her into a detested one in the flip of a switch.
I finished the movie feeling relieved it was over and also pleasantly surprised by the plot. Overall, it is worth watching if you want a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you are looking for something new, definitely check it out.
