We are definitely not too old to trick or treat. Trick or treating is a fun way to hang out with your friends and have fun outside, instead of staying home. If teens were excluded from trick or treating, then the Halloween community would lose a core part of itself. For many teens, trick or treating is an annual event that they have been enjoying since childhood. There is no reason that joy should be taken away from them. Trick or treating is also important for mental health. As we get older and mature into adults, we tend to rein in our emotions to some extent, leading to stress and emotional detachment. Trick or treating is a way for teens to connect with their inner child, be youthful and relieve themselves from societal norms. Trick or treating is a core element of teens’ Halloween traditions that can help relieve stress and help teens stay connected with their inner child, while getting free candy as a bonus!

We are too old for trick-or-treating. My main concern is the younger children already out on Halloween. If teens are out, they often take too much candy that should be for the kids. High schoolers are bigger and, in large numbers, will deplete the stash. Additionally, the costumes that teens wear may be overly sexualized or frightening for young kids. Some don’t even put the effort into having a costume and go from door to door expecting to be given candy. Additionally, some teens act inappropriately around young kids, like cursing or trying to scare them. While many teens are responsible and mindful, the ones who aren’t can ruin the magic of Halloween for little kids. Teenagers should get their own candy and do activities, such as haunted houses, scary movies or parties with friends! The excitement of Halloween doesn’t have to end; it can just switch to other spooky holiday ideas.
