Since the start of his presidency, Donald Trump has issued over 200 executive orders affecting various facets of Americans’ lives. Executive Order 14327, signed on July 31, reinstates the Presidential Fitness Test, mandating it for every public school in the United States.
According to MentalFloss, in 1955, scientists studied the number of American children who failed one of the six mobility tests administered at school at that time. The failure rate was 58% compared to 8% in European countries. This prompted President Eisenhower to create the first Presidential Fitness Test.
Kenneth Weinberg, one of Lincoln’s physical education teachers, said the Presidential Fitness Test won’t change much for Lincoln students.
“We’re not doing anything different than we’re already doing,” Weinberg said.
According to Weinberg, the reason that the Presidential Fitness Test won’t affect Lincoln students is that there was already a robust testing system in place. This test covers all the components of the Presidential Fitness Test, plus it educates students about why mental and physical health are important.
The standards that are highlighted in the Presidential Fitness Test are qualifications to receive a Presidential fitness award for meeting certain standards, such as running a 6:08 mile for a 16-year-old male or being able to do 45 situps as a 16-year-old female.
Some students, like freshman Kainoa Waier, think there may be downsides to these standards.
“It might discourage them [unathletically gifted people] a little,” said Waier.
