With no previous journalism experience, Senior Laney Urness joined The Cardinal Times for friendship and stayed to develop her interviewing skills.
“My friend Donovan [Schubert] actually influenced me to join the class because it would be fun,” said Urness. “I always liked reading The Cardinal Times, too, and so I was like, ‘it could be fun to write my own articles.’”
On The Cardinal Times, Urness has written articles about farmers markets, made a podcast on college applications and filmed “Mic’d up” videos of different sports. Her favorite memories on The Cardinal Times are spending time with her classmates William Schoinas and Donovan Schubert.
“I did a food review with Will and Donovan, and we went to… a bunch of different taco food carts [and] taco restaurants, and that was really really fun,” said Urness.
Urness is also a teacher’s assistant for Melanie Hammericksen’s Culinary Arts 3-4 class.
“Laney’s the best. Laney is a hard worker and always has a good attitude,” said Hammericksen. “She’s kind to everyone. Kind, nice, helpful, and wonderful.”
After high school, Urness will be studying marketing at San Diego State University. She believes skills from journalism will help her in the future.
“[The Cardinal Times] has definitely taught me how to easily talk to people and ask …questions,” said Urness. “ I think that going into college, [this skill] will definitely be really useful for me for meeting new people.”
