“Dirty soda” is all the rage on social media, and Fizz n Sip, Portland’s new dirty soda shop, offers Portlanders an opportunity to see what the craze is all about. Dirty sodas consist of various sodas combined with cream, coconut milk and other flavored syrups to create a concoction of creamy, fruity and sweet deliciousness.

According to CBS, dirty soda originated in Utah and can be attributed to the large Mormon population not drinking coffee due to religious beliefs.

Fizz n Sip opened its doors on Feb. 8 at 2726 N Killingsworth St., a 10-minute drive from Lincoln. They offer a variety of sodas, energy drinks and sparkling water with customizable flavors. I tried four different drinks to see which ones are worth coming back for.

Upon walking in the shop, the atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, with lots of seating and natural light. It was a pleasant place for my friend and I to sit and enjoy our drinks. The staff was also super friendly.

The first drink I tried was “The Gorge,” an energy drink featuring original Red Bull as the base combined with blackberry, pomegranate and raspberry syrups. While the berry flavors all paired very well together, this drink could have been better if a fruity Red Bull flavor was used as the base as opposed to the original flavor. It reminded me of a subpar and more expensive version of the Dutch Bros Rebel™ energy drink. “The Gorge” costs $7.08 for 16oz, while Dutch Bros averages around $5.75 for their Rebel. If you are looking to get an energy drink, I would recommend you stick to Dutch Bros.

The next two drinks that I ordered were “Timbers” and “1851,” which had similar tastes and ingredients. “Timbers” featured a classic Coca-Cola base with vanilla syrup, strawberry puree and coconut cream. “1851” had a Dr. Pepper base with vanilla and cherry syrup and coconut cream as well. In both drinks, the flavors paired well with the soda base and the coconut taste was strong, which gave the drinks an almost tropical feel. I preferred “1851” as a big fan of Dr. Pepper, but the two drinks tasted very similar and were both delicious. They were unlike anything I had ever tried before, and I would definitely come back to order these.

The final drink I tried was the “West Coast,” with vanilla agave as the base, along with strawberry puree, strawberry syrup and sweet cream. This drink was by far the best out of the four that I tried. It was perfectly creamy and sweet, and the strawberry puree added a delicious and strong strawberry flavor. The drink was the perfect fruity treat.

Overall, Fizz n Sip is definitely worth a stop if you want a delicious and unique drink. However, I would recommend ordering the dirty sodas as opposed to the energy drinks.
