This fall Lincoln introduced its new ultimate frisbee team, Lincoln Ultimate. Previously some students who played ultimate frisbee were part of a team called Westside Rise.
According to one of Lincoln’s ultimate frisbee coaches, Chris Parker, Portland Ultimate, a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen the ultimate frisbee community, wants to tie ultimate teams to specific high schools as well as middle schools.
Lincoln’s ultimate team is an open JV meaning that anyone can play regardless of gender, ability, or experience. The team practices every Monday from 4-6 at Hamilton Park and their games are at Glenhaven park. The cost to play varies from $70-$100 dollars.
Senior Jack Caldwell is on the team and says it is inclusive and supportive.
“Last season the team was quite close. It was a lot of fun. Every one of the players support each other, our coach is also a very great coach and super kind and it was just a great team environment to grow in the sport with,” said Caldwell. “Ultimate in general is a sport that spirit is a major part of. You’re going to be hard pressed to really find people in the sport of ultimate who don’t want you to just keep playing and have fun. That’s really reflective throughout most of the team dynamics.”
Assistant coach Toby Platt (Lincoln class of 2024) agrees that the ultimate frisbee environment is a good one.
“It’s a very positive environment,” said Platt. “It’s really hard to find a frisbee player that [has] negative energy is what they say. The players learn from each other and there’s a lot of teamwork, bonding and coaching each other to get better and get ready for the next few games.”
Caldwell encourages new players to join the team and people who don’t play to come support them at games.
“Everyone should play ultimate. It’s really fun, and if you don’t want to play you should at least come to a game or something and check it out,” said Caldwell. “Also just throw [a frisbee] with your friends if you don’t want to play ultimate. Just pick up a frisbee, it’s just the best.”
