Erika Leung has been part of the Mass Communications program for three years, joining Lincoln’s magazine Beyond the Flock as a sophomore. Leung was art director and editor-in-chief before Beyond the Flock was discontinued this year. She was transferred to The Cardinal Times as a reporter for the 2023-2024 school year.
Leung’s favorite articles to write are connected to her interests. Leung’s favorite article while working on The Cardinal Times covered the Portland Public Schools (PPS) climate crisis response which connects to her interests in climate justice.
“I’ve really enjoyed [writing] about things connected to me like my environmental justice work, community issues and social justice issues, as well as things happening that connect to larger systematic issues close to home like PPS,” said Leung.
Next year, Leung will be attending Cornell University to study applied economics and management. She will miss The Cardinal Times and the opportunities it gave her to explore her interests.
“I’m going to miss having a place where I can exercise my own creativity and also rabbit hole down my own curiosity as much as I’d like,” said Leung.
Leung has won two Best of Student Newspapers Online (SNO) awards this year for her work on “Portland Public Schools takes on the climate crisis” and “Lincoln students shine with entrepreneurial spirit.”
“Journalism allows you to create a portfolio of your own interests and wants and allows you to really connect with different aspects of the community that you wouldn’t have a chance to otherwise,” said Leung.
