Multitalented in many mediums
Trying to sum up Laine Bolte’s art in a single sentence is impossible. She has art ranging from graphic design to clothing design. At the spring IB art show, most participating students focused on one medium, but Bolte displayed everything from digital design to ceramic sculpture. Next year, Bolte will add another medium to her portfolio: fashion designer.
“I have taken ceramics for four years, draw-paint-print for three. I’m currently in graphic and product design. I did IB (art) for a short period of time last year but ended up having too crazy of a schedule and ended up doing it this year,” says Bolte.
As a multi-media art student, Bolte views the art world from a different perspective than many.
“I’m really glad that I decided to take a bunch of different classes. I feel like I can connect multiple mediums together. It’s helped me learn the basic skills, and how to translate things into 3D and 2D, which is really fun,” she says.
Last summer, Bolte attended a fashion-focused week-long program at Parsons School of Design in New York.
“The professors were amazing and the program was really great. I’ve never had an experience where I felt like this was meant to be,” she says. “I’ve never connected with a group of people or felt like this is what I want to do so much.”
At Parsons, Bolte learned skills such as sewing and construction of clothing. The experience inspired her to pursue opportunities in the fashion industry.
“I want to go more in the direction of studying fiber and material studies. I’m really interested in textile production and developing prints,” says Bolte. “I have a fine arts background and I know how to sew, but I haven’t done it a ton. It’s an interesting connection with what I’ve been doing and what I can do.”
