Happy birthday, Abe

Abe waits for the sunrise on his birthday, Feb. 12. The school assumed Abraham Lincoln’s name in 1909 when the nation celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth. Anchoring the end of freshman hall, the statue was designed for the entryway of the school’s previous building, which is now part of the Portland State University campus.

Thursday marks the 206th birthday of Lincoln High School’s namesake. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, was born on February 12, 1809.

“We should have the day off,” said freshman Griffin Anderton. Unlikely, but students and staff will have Feb. 16 off for Presidents’ Day.
