Song of the Week: “Money“ by Pink Floyd
Released as a single from their conceptual album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” “Money” earned Pink Floyd mainstream success when it reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.
Although it preaches against the usefulness of money, Pink Floyd ironically made lots of cash off the tune, as the album sold over 34 million copies.
Written by vocalist and bass player Roger Waters, “Money” is notable for the signature tape loop of reeling cash registers, clinking coins, and tearing papers heard in the opening. The song features some of Waters’ best bass playing, and David Gilmour’s mid-song guitar solo was ranked 62nd in “The Greatest 100 Guitar Solos” by Guitar World.
The bluesy, transAtlantic feel of this track can be attributed to the saxophone solo from Dick Parry, helping it to stand out from the psychedelia of the rest of the album.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend that you give “Money” a listen.
