Varsity girls prep for first pre-season contest
It’s a new year and a new mindset for the Lady Cards as they prepare for their first game Dec. 5 in the Sheldon Tournament.
“Everyone is competing for a spot,” said head coach, Glen Lee of the 36 girls who participated in the tryouts for for JV2, JV, and varsity spots. This is Lee’s second season as head coach, and his main goal is to win thePIL title. “I hope maybe we even get a first-round game in the playoffs,” he said.
Last year the girls lost to Westview in the first round of the playoffs. Some tough opponents the Cards will face this season as they re-enter the PIL are Grant, Wilson, and Cleveland. “We want to come ready to play,” Lee said
Varsity players are enthusiastic. “A lot of excitement in the air,” Lee said. “They are ready to go.” Despite graduation, the team still has some familiar faces. Senior forward Reilly Johnson, senior guards Abby Eakin, and Gabby Beard all played last year, although Beard missed the season due to an ACL tear before games began.
Senior transfer from Aloha, Nohea Waiwaiole, is confident in her team having a successful year, although, there are things she thinks the team needs to work on, such as “just gaining more experience together as a team and continuing to build our team chemistry.” Waiwaiole also believes that there is a difference between the two style of plays at Lincoln than at Aloha. “I would say Lincoln has a much more team-oriented focus as well as a more competitive atmosphere,” she said.
Not only are new players are arriving at Lincoln this season, but four new coaches as well, one of them a Lincoln alum, Mackenzie Blythe.
