Soccer teams begin state playoffs at home Saturday

Post-season action begins for the 13th-ranked girls varsity soccer team (10-3-1) Nov. 1 on Mike Walsh Field in a state playoff doubleheader that also spotlights the PIL champion boys’ team.

The girls will play 20th-ranked McMinnville (8-3-3) at 6:30 p.m., and the 14th-ranked boys play the 19th-ranked North Medford Black Tornados (5-4-1) start it off at 4 p.m. The boys finished atop the PIL with a 6-1 league record and 7-6-1 overall, scoring 36 goals and allowing 24. Winner of their game will play either Century or West Linn Nov. 5 in the second round of the playoffs

The McMinnville Grizzlies have come off a five-game winning streak without a single score against. “I think it’ll be a good matchup,” said senior left defender Abby Eakin. “I’m confident that we can put up a fight and hopefully get the win.” Lincoln has had a good season so far, scoring 52 goals while allowing only 14. “I feel like we’ve played better than the other years i’ve been at Lincoln,” said senior goalkeeper Gabby Beard.

Beard has had experience playing with one of McMinnville’s better players, Carlisle Topping having played with Topping on their club team. “She’s a very hard worker and goes in hard for tackles. She’s very strong,” Beard said. Lincoln also has talent and fire power. Junior midfielder Emma Perlman is essential to their defense and offense, and senior forward Morgan Matthews,  a PSU commit for soccer, is the team leader in goals.

Last year, the girls lost to Jesuit in the quarter finals. If they beat McMinnville, they will play either Grant or Central Catholic in the second round Nov. 4. The time and schedule for that game is still to be determined.
