Song of the Week: “Angie” by The Rolling Stones
Released as a single off their 1973 album Goats Head Soup, “Angie” shot The Rolling Stones to the top of the charts for their seventh number one hit.
Penned by the Glimmer Twins, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the tune is a heartfelt ballad telling the story of an ending romance. While Richards drove the acoustic song forward, second guitarist Mick Taylor’s skills gave the guitar section an emotion-filled sound. Jagger sings pensively to match the lyrics, “Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear?”
Appearing as the last song of the first half of the record, “Angie” proved to be a powerful yet delicate number to conclude the four swinging and upbeat songs that came before. However, when listened to as a full CD now, “Angie” will still hold up as one of the best tunes to come from the super-group.
