Wing T: The Football Team Revamps Its Offense

“The Wing T offense limits itself to one wide receiver in exchange for a stronger backfield and 2 extra players on the front line.”

After a lackluster performance by the football team’s offense this past year during its 2-7 season, members of the new coaching staff are planning a major overhaul. Chief among them is head coach Eric Fraser, formerly a coach at Wilsonville High School. In recent meetings with next year’s prospective players, Fraser presented his plans to run the “Wing T” offense.

The Wing T, popular for many years with high school and some college teams, was devised by former University of Delaware coach David Nelson and his successor Tubby Raymond. Typically, the offense is strong in run plays and motion plays, which may hint to a style of play-calling radically different from last year’s extremely pass-intensive playbook.

The team is also introducing a more intense weight lifting program, run by Lincoln alum Austin Cheadle, who played halfback at Occidental College and Portland State.

Fans and players are hoping that Fraser and other add-ons to the coaching staff will be able to breathe new life into the program in the upcoming year. Until then, players will be doing their part, hard at work in spring practices and summer training camps.

Several have expressed their excitement over the coming changes. “It’s a really different style of offense than what I’m used to,” said junior Michael Phillippi, a varsity squad member. “I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out, and I just hope I can adapt to it and do my part.”
