Track Teams Set for District Meet; Split with Westview
In their final meet before the district championships May 14 and 16, the boys’ track team beat Westview 74-71 and the girls lost 78.5 – 66.5 on May 7.
The boys finished the season 3-3 in league meets, and the girls were 2-4.
The boys claimed 11 out 17 events at Westview. Senior Karl Sanft was a double winner in the shot (49-11) and discus (147-06. He leads the Metro League in both events and is fourth in the shot statewide among 6A throwers with a best of 54-11.25 and third in the discus (154-10). Senior Gabe Collins won the 3000m (9:15.01), and Trevor Swope won the 300m hurdles (41.55).
The girls won seven events at Westview, with first-place performances turned in by junior Kesiah Clement in the pole vault (9.06) and senior Julia Eckelmann in the javelin (99.11). Freshman Annika Steele was a double winner in the 3000m (11:23.69) and 1500m (5:17.16). Tess Michaelson, who has the fastest Metro League time in the 400m (58.34) and the best 6A time in the 800m (2;12.6) won that event in (2:14.31).
The junior varsity teams claimed nine district titles at the Metro League championship meet May 9 hosted by Lincoln. Sophomore Zoe Simpson was a triple winner in taking the 200m title in 27.92 seconds and anchoring the winning 4x100m relay (52,31). Other members of the team were Stevie Izzie, Keauna Cobb, and Breauna Cobb. Simpson also ran on the winning 4×400 relay team (4:27.57) that included Tess Parker, Adie Fecker, and Ciara Williams. Rachael Frankovic took gold in the shot with a throw of 30-05.5 feet. First-place in the boys 1500m was taken by frehman Dominic Arce (4:17.37).
