Back on Track: The Stand-Out Stars of Track and Field
Adrianna Coates, hurdles
Senior Adrianna Coates is a top varsity track athlete, breaking the 6A top 10 for both the 300-meter hurdles (46.08) and the 4×100-meter relay (49.14), as well as competing in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault. Coates has also scored points at every meet she has participated in.
Coates is a student at Northwest Academy, which does not offer track and field, so she competes for the Cardinals.
“I just love being a part of such a great team with such great coaches,” Coates said.
While her addition to the team might be unorthodox, she is a highly valued member. Along with her impressive list of accomplishments, Coates is dedicated.
“I love track,” she said. “It will always be a part of my life.”
Trevor Cheadle, pole vault
As a varsity football, wrestling, and track athlete, it’s no surprise Trevor Cheadle is among the best at what he does.
The senior holds fourth place in the 6A for pole vaulting with a personal record of 13’6″.
Sports have been an important part of Cheadle’s life during his high school career. “I love the bond and feeling of a team,” he said.
Cheadle first started vaulting freshman year with two years of track experience under his belt. “I really wanted to do it because it was unique,” he said. Suffice it to say, the match was a good one. Cheadle was promoted to varsity his first season and has only gotten better since. Now, he hopes to win districts and place at state.
“I really like setting goals for myself and working to achieve them,” he said. “Track and sports really give me the chance to better myself.”
Simone Peters, 4 x 100 and long jump
As a freshman, Simone Peters does what only four girls on a track team of more than 150 athletes do: compete in the varsity 4x 100m relay. As the youngest member of the 6A’s ninth-best relay team, Peters can get nervous. “I’m definitely intimidated sometimes because [my teammates] have more experience,” she said.
The freshman, however, does not let that deter her in competition. “No matter what I’m doing, no matter what meet, I’m going to try my best,” she said. Peters’ commitment to track and field is evident in her results. She was one of only four freshman sent to the Laker Classic Invitational last month, where she finished 11th in the 100m (13.41).
Despite her dedication to the sport, however, Peters can still poke fun at herself. “The thing I like most about my event,” she said, “is that it’s over fast…hopefully.”
