Students in it to win it all in Kahoot club
Kahoot is an online multiplayer quiz often used in classrooms as a fun way to engage students knowledge on a topic. When students hear the signature Kahoot jingle and see the entry code pop up on the board, they often get excited, as it is a very interactive and competitive game that almost makes it feel like you’re not in class.
This is why sophomore Roman Smith and his friends decided to create a kahoot club at Lincoln this year.
Roman said the hardest part about starting the club was finding a place to hold it. Originally they signed up to be in room 135, but found that they were competing with another club for that same Friday lunch spot. Despite their massive 70-person turnout, Roman said they were “kicked out” and had to begin searching for a new home.
Finally they wound up in room 169, but as they drifted from room to room, some of their members drifted out, leaving them with only a 15-to-20 person turnout on average.
Still, Roman doesn’t regret sticking with holding the club on Fridays. He said he chose it because he felt that it fit the day.
“Fridays are at the end of the week so everyone is in a good mood. Why not play kahoot?” he said.
Roman said that at first, he didn’t have any idea what he was doing, but that it all fell together nicely. His friends made posters in design class, they showed up to club fair and 70 people came to their first meeting.
The topics of his Kahoots range from popular movies to just about anything someone volunteers. If someone requests a specific topic he can make a custom Kahoot, but usually he uses public Kahoots made by other people, like a Finding Nemo Kahoot they played last Friday.
After the Winter Sports assembly, where leadership put together a Lincoln-themed Kahoot, Roman thought about hosting an all-school Kahoot.
“It’d be awesome to have an all-school Kahoot, but the only problem with that is there’d be no way to control what people’s names are so you might have people submitting offensive names.” Roman ran into this problem in his own club, especially on the days when the room was packed.
Roman is a huge advocate for the game and thinks it is a great tool for teachers to use in class. It is also a fun way to bring students together by using it recreationally.
He made the club because “everyone loves playing Kahoot in class so why wouldn’t they like playing out of class on fun topics they can choose?”
With the drop in attendance, Roman is trying to fill the club back up, saying, “if you like playing Kahoot in class this is the club for you, plus the more people you have the more fun it is, if we had an all school I can’t even imagine how insane that would be.”
