Boys’ soccer claims PIL title

The boys’ varsity soccer team claimed the PIL championship Oct. 23 in the third annual Crosstown Clash, which featured a boys’ and girls’ doubleheader against the Grant Generals at Mike Walsh Field.  It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

Despite the boys’ 2-1 loss, their overall league record (6-1-0) propelled them to the title, with Grant (5-0-2) finishing just one point behind.  Junior William Liu scored the Cardinals’ lone goal.  The girls’ varsity team also fell to Grant, 4-2. Coming into the match in a four-way tie for first in the PIL, the loss dropped the team to 4th, while Grant jumped to 1st.  The girls will play McMinnville Nov. 1 in round one of the state playoffs. The boys will play North Medford in their state playoff game also on Nov. 1. Both games will be on Mike Walsh Field. Times have not been announced.

Attendance at the Crosstown Clash was lower than expected for the Clash.  Organizers were hoping to beat last year’s record of 3,045, but only about 500 people attended, with temperatures dropping to the low 50s as night fell.
