Flying Lotus lays down electronic jazz fusion on ‘You’re Dead!’

The newest release from the ever-creative Flying Lotus is no disappointment.

Following four innovative albums, “You’re Dead!” proves to be a progression into mind-bending sounds. Made up of 19 tracks, the death-related concept album features the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg.

Flying Lotus concocted a mixture of hip-hop, electronica, and jazz, all combining to create fluid and dreamlike transitions from song to song. Ominous and surreal in their roots, the instrumental tunes are reminiscent of Miles Davis’ experimental days with a far more modern twist. Shifts between moments of musical chaos to pensive soundscapes appear frequently throughout. By the time the album wraps up, it ends on a strange yet hopeful note with the final track entitled “The Protest,” in which the simplistic lyrics are chanted: “We will live on forever.”

Key tracks are “Never Catch Me (feat. Kendrick Lamar)” and “Dead Man’s Tetris.” (feat. Captain Murphy and Snoop Dogg)
