College credits available for Outdoor School leaders

Students who were leaders at Outdoor School during the fall session have the opportunity to receive two college credits for their efforts.

According to Kitty Broyer, an Outdoor School official, Portland Community College offers the credits for $25 upon completion of an application and a one-page paper about the experience.

“The opportunity to get college credits at such a cheap price is exciting,” said Laura Tuazon, sophomore who volunteered at Howard. Parents of student leaders are also excited about the offer. “It’s great to reward high school students for being responsible role models and for teaching the impressionable sixth grade class to love science and the world around them,” said Kristina Kurtz, the mother of another sophomore student leader. “You don’t get this kind of opportunity every day, and I encourage all student leaders to take advantage of it.”

The opportunity is only for those who have not yet received credits from past Outdoor School sessions. The form, essay, and payments are all due by Nov. 13 and can be sent in to MESD Outdoor School PO Box 301039, Portland, OR 97294-9039. Student leaders also receive 50 community service hours for their effort regardless of whether they receive the credits.
